heroes | jersey boy | logistics | ride Logistics Saturday Saturday, October 23, 2010 Wake up 4am ET. Taxi at 4:30am. Flight departs 6:15am. Charlotte connectino departs 9:19am. Arrive Austin 11:10am CT. Pickup Avis rental car. Collect suitcase from baggage claim. Drive to convention center. Find parking ($7). Pick up registration packet: bib number, LiveStrong paraphenalia, and assorted trinkets. Walk to Cedar Door to meet Elden, Lisa, and Team Fatty 1pm (click any image to enlarge). Fascinated by Janeen's account of her Precious 4,410 mile cross-country ride. Drive to The Austin Wine Merchant for two bottles of Pedronicelli Vineyard's 2009 Pinot Noir. Drive to Patti's house in Lost Creek to pick up borrowed bike 3pm. Minus one bottle Pinot Noir. Why a borrowed bike? Because I procrastinated renting and I came up empty at Austin's 10+ bike shops. Drive to Fairfield Inn and Suites on North Mopac to drop off bike. Unpack. Drive to Kim and Lance's house near Emma Long Metro Park to pick up borrowed bike 4:30p. Minus second bottle of Pinot Noir. Why a SECOND borrowed bike? Just hedging against a pickup glitch or a size mismatch. Drive back to Fairfield Inn and Suites. Room looks like satellite store for Mellow Johnny's or Bicycle Sport Shop. Clean up for the awards dinner, invite courtesy Fatty (see his video here). Lance recounts the origins of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) back in the mid 1990s. John "College" Korioth, LAF CEO Doug Ullman, and he (above left) know what they want, but not how. "Martin Luther King Junior didn't say, 'I have a plan!" Asked about the future of the LAF, Lance imagines being asked, "What's up with LiveStrong?," to which he'll respond (Cancer being defeated), "Dude, it's great, it's a bar now." At one point, in response to an audience question, Lance drops a hint. Two, actually. Ironman. Hawaii. Lots of light moments, great energy, but a serious topic at hand. If you're fighting cancer, or know someone who is, check out the LAF's LiveStrong Guidebook. Back to hotel, swap in my saddle, test ride in parking lot, sweet Giant too big, redundancy wins. Finishing packing, obsess over what I'm forgetting, give up, get to sleep too late. Coppi, tomorrow we ride. back to portfolio | email me at dieffenbach @ alum.mit.edu |
