[My pictures of the Masters 45+ race] It's important to get out of the starting blocks fast. I almost didn't even get out of my minivan. If my bikes will be in the van overnight, I often lock my them with Kryptonite cables and a sturdy Master lock. As I was starting my parking lot prep in the morning, I couldn't find the key. Normally, it sits on a separate loop that I add to my normal ring of keys. Well, the night before, I had separated off my car key for pocketability reasons and in the process, left the Master lock key in a jacket pocket. Fortunately, I keep a set of bolt cutters hidden in my van. I had no idea how easy or hard it would be to cut through the Kryptonite cable. Well, now I know. 2 minutes. Keep that in mind the next time you trust your multi-thousand dollar baby to a few thin strands of steel. Bikes freed, I dropped my MTB in the pit (foreshadowing) and took a preride lap. Flash forward to the start. The results showed 109 riders, and not all that many of them started behind me. I got a nice jump at the whistle and threaded my way up through the pack, gaining a whole bunch of places many of which I'd eventually give back. Through the woods, down to the beach, a nice run, back on the bike, through the in-race bike wash, back in the woods, steps, logs, barriers, roots, repeat. I'm not sure what prompted me to do it, but I took my three beach runs right down along the waterline where the footing was firmer. Win! I averaged 6 or so seconds faster than Jon M on the beach runs, and no way am I a better runner than he is. You want proof? My 6 Bandit 5k runs this year occupy 6 of the 7 slowest of the 280+ runs turned in by the MacRun crowd. But today, I had (relative) wings on my feet. Lap 1 down, then lap 2, then lap 3. Then lap 3 1/2. Or maybe it was only 2 1/2. Someone help me out here. The course layout was odd in that the finish line was a half to two-thirds of the way around the lap. That really threw me--I had it in my head that I had a fair bit to go as I was crossing the line. I don't think I could have picked off the rider ahead of me had I known, but knowing wouldn't have hurt. 54 of 66 in the Cat 4 35+ field, 82% of the way back, pretty typical for me, I'm happy with it. And just plain happy--a truly fun course. Oh, and I was totally playing with you about the foreshadowing--pit bike stayed in the pit. My lap 1 video: The Numbers: click here for Strava
