Cyclocross race number two for me. Several things worth noting.

1. Unlike Lowell last weekend, when I was riding my mountain bike, at Sterling, I had the pleasure of riding Bob J.'s Seven Mudhoney SL. While I didn't exactly do it the justice that a bike of that fine lineage deservers, I certainly enjoyed getting around the course in style.

2. With the exception of a half-dozen point leader call-ups, the start order was random. Of the 97 riders that made up the Cat 4 and Cat 4 35+ fields, I was placed in the third row with riders 21-30. Josh B. was in the fifth row, I think. And Jon M. was in the back.

3. Josh passed me on the right at the 20 second mark just before the start-finish line.

4. I didn't see when Jon passed me, but I'm guessing it was at the cluster at the 1:55 mark.

5. Once I settled in, not too many places changed hands. I made it to the fourth and final circuit without being lapped, so that's an improvement from last week in Lowell even if my raw finish wasn't quite as "good."

6. I spent most of the race jockeying with John Baron of Lexington. You can see him pass me at the 10:30 mark on lap 1. On the final lap, I caught and passed him on the steps climb that you can see at 7:45 on the first lap. I led him for a bit, as I was a bit faster on the climbs and remounts. He had the edge on the descents, though ... and he ultimately had a bit more in the tank, gapping me by 3 seconds.

7. I ended up finishing 93rd of 97 (and 69th of 73 in the 35+ Cat 4 category).

8. This was the last race where I'll be concerned with staying out of the way and not messing up someone else's race. You've been warned.
