Almost all of the leagues are
within a couple games of finishing up and three major titles are
still to be decided. In Germany, Fredi Bobic continued his amazing
season with a hat trick that led Bremen to the top of the league.
Bobic finished the season with 17 goals, a mark that will not likely
be challenged for league scoring honors. Bremen is done for the year
and now must wait for Lipzeig to play their final game to see if
they've won the title. Lipzeig plays lowly Dusseldorf, needing a win
to capture the German title.
In England, IRA scored one of
the biggest wins of the year. In a game between two top five teams,
IRA beat number one Wimbledon behind two Dwight Yorke goals. The
victory puts IRA on the brink of winning the Premier
League.
In Italy, Ordine Nuovo captured the Italian Cup in a
3-1 victory over AS Firenze. The Italian league resumes this week as
they will play a furious tail to their schedule that will soon crown
a champ.
Zeemacht captured the Dutch title with a victory
over Lancers in a penalty kick shootout in the league's championship
playoff game.
Italy Italian
Cup Final Ordine Nuovo 3, AS Firenze 1 - Ordine Nuovo avenged
a mediocre performance in the Italian league by winning the Italian
Cup. Ronaldo scored twice and Olive added a goal as Ordine easily
beat AS Firenze. Ronaldo scored the first goal of the game in the
12th minute after receiving a long ball from Pirlo on the left side
of the field, dribbling Maldini, the last man in front of him, and
easily scoring the go-ahead goal. Olive added to the lead in the
29th minute scoring on a rebound after a Ronaldo free kick had hit
the post. At that time AS Firenze had yet to get a shot on goal. In
the second half, Firenze got a shot on goal and also a score as
Shevchenko found the Ordine Nuovo defense sleeping and found himself
alone in the box on a Leonardo feed to make it 2-1. Unfortuately,
that would be Firenze's only shot on goal of the game. Ordine
controlled the flow of the game and Ronaldo added his second goal of
the night in the 65th minute, scoring on an easy empty-netter after
a Del Vecchio shot had been saved by the goalie.

in their season finale.

Baden that ensured their top of the table standing in
2001.
Bremen Brewers 3, Ruhr Fire 1 - Fredi Bobic's hat trick
led Bremen over Ruhr and gave the Brewers a two point lead in the
championship.Bremen will win the title if Leipzig will not win its
last game in Dusseldorf, the team that eliminated Leipzig from the
German Cup. Both Bremen and Ruhr had 4 shots on goal for the game,
the difference being the more talented Brewer forward. Bobic scored
in the 3rd, 44th and 52nd minute to give Bremen a 3-0 lead. Zickler
scored the lone Fire goal in the 72nd minute.
German
Cup Semifinals - 2nd Leg Berlin United 1, Stuttgart 0 (Berlin
United advances on 2-1 aggregate) - Victor Ikpeba scored in the 78th
minute to give Berlin a 1-0 lead and a ticket to the German Cup
final. Berlin attacked for most of the game but was unable to create
any scoring chances. On the other hand Stuttgart appeared as if it
was waiting for a good counter attack chance to score the goal it
needed to advance. Stuttgart's chances for a win were severely hurt
when Elber had to leave the field in the 33rd minute with an injury.
To add insult to injury, three minutes later Hassler was ejected
from the game for a foul on Sahlihamidiz. In the second half Berlin
dominated and outshot Stuttgart 5-1, finally scoring with Ikpeba
after a Santa Cruz shot had hit the upright.
Dusseldorf 2,
Bremen Brewers 1 (Bremen Brewers advances on away goals) -
Dusseldorf, which had already shocked the world by eliminating
Leipzig in the first round of the cup, was 7 minutes away from
eliminating league leading Bremen when Fredi Bobic scored on a
breakaway to give Bremen the goal it needed to advance to the cup
final. Jancker and Neuville scored one goal apiece in the first half
as Dusseldorf thoroughly dominated Bremen. In the second half Bremen
was unable to create any scoring chances until the 83rd minute when
Bobic got the ball at midfield, dribbled the last defender and
scored the goal that is worth the final.

FRANCE Marseille 3, Alsace 1 -
Marseille continued its late season surge winning in Alsace.
Dhorasoo scored twice in the second half and Boffin added a late
goal to overcome Bastien's 12th minute goal for Alsace.
La
Resistance 0, Paris 0 - La Resistance and Paris played to a
scoreless draw virtually gives Brest the French title. In a game
marred by fouls (8 in the end) both teams had plenty of scoring
chances with Simone and Okocha getting excellent opportunities in
the waning minutes. In injury time La Resistance had perhaps the
best chance as Christian freed himself in the left side of the box
and hit the post on his shot. After hitting the post the ball
bounced back to the middle of the box where it was cleared by the
Paris defense.
Brest 2, Bordeaux 2 - Baticle scored two goals
to give Brest a tie at home and the championship. Dugarry scored for
Bordeaux in the 2nd minute. After Baticle tied the game in the 7th
minute, Laslandes gave Bordeaux a 2-1 lead. Needing only a tie to
clinch the championship, Brest attacked with full forces in the
second half and finally tied the game in the 57th minute with
Baticle's second goal.
Alsace 0, La Resistance 0 - Alsace and
La Resistance played to a 0-0 draw as Alsace finished at the bottom
of the table.

Playoff Zeemacht 1, Lancers 1 (Zeemacht wins 5-3 on PKs) -
Zeemacht and Lancers played all season only to finish tied in the
standings. They played 90 minutes and were tied 1-1 in their playoff
game. They played another 30 minutes and no victor. Finally, after
Orlando Trustfull converted the final penalty kick of the match,
Zeemacht was able to claim the title and put a cap on what was an
amazing comeback from a horrific start to their season. Pierre von
Hooijdonk missed an easy chance early in the second half for Lancers
and moments later, Pius Ikedia scored to give Zeemacht a 1-0 lead in
the 53rd minute. The lead was short-lived as Andy van der Meyde
pulled Lancers level in the 60th. Robin Nelisse went in alone for
Zeemacht but shot wide in the 89th and Knowto hit the post in
overtime for Lancers. After Nelisse hit the first PK to give
Zeemacht a 1-0 lead, Vogel's shot was tipped over the bar by the
keeper to give Zeemacht a quick edge. Gerard DeNoojer, Oviedu
Stinga, and Bosschart all converted for Zeemacht to setup Trustfull.
His shot went just past the reach of the diving keeper and into the
net, giving the title and a berth in the World Club Championships to
Zeemacht.
