Inside the MLSA
Soccer Wrap Up The FIFA regular season
wrapped up last week and the Berwick Rangers completed an unlikely
comeback to win the Premier League title. After watching Wimbledon
lose to last place IRA last week, the Rangers won their finale to
force a playoff. In the one game title tilt, Andy Cole scored twice
to lead Berwick to their first EPL title. Birmingham’s Roy Keane was
named English Player of the Year. La Forza beat Madrid 4-0 in the
Cup Winners’ Cup final to qualify for the World Club Championship
and Salamanca beat Juventus in the UEFA Cup final. Luis Figo
cemented his status as one of the world’s best with a 35 yard goal
to open the scoring in the Spanish side’s 3-0 victory. This year’s
worlds figure to have many of the sport’s top stars with Luis Figo,
Hernan Crespo, Roy Keane, Rivaldo, Paul Scholes, and Raul already
booked to compete. Zinedine Zidane’s Olympic Barcelona figures to
have a good chance at gaining an at large bid after their third
place finish in the Spanish Premier League, arguably the best league
in the world this year.
The field for the FIFA World Club Championships will
be announced this Thursday. The sixteen team field will include 12
to 14 automatic qualifiers and 2 to 4 at large invitees. |
