MLS: New York, San Diego Set Open Cup Rematch

Donovan Leads Sun to Victory

December 16, 2002

San Diego 2, Texas 2
First Leg: Texas 1, @ San Diego 0 – Andy Williams scored the game’s only game in the 15th minute as Texas dominated the first leg on the road. Texas outshot San Diego 10-5 and held possession for 60% of the match, constantly pressing the action in the Sun’s end. However, Texas was unable to put another goal away thanks to the efforts of Scott Garlick and San Diego’s net.

Second Leg: San Diego 2, @ Texas 1 – Texas seemingly had their semifinal series with San Diego wrapped up until Landon Donovan showed flashes of the potential that make him the future of American soccer. After Brian McBride gave Texas a 1-0 lead in the return leg and a 2-0 lead in the aggregate, Donovan took over in the final 15 minutes of the game. He notched his first goal in the 78th with a powerful shot and then lifted San Diego with a goal less than two minutes from time that tied the aggregate 2-2 but put San Diego through on the away goals rule. San Diego will meet New York in a rematch of last year’s U.S. Open Cup Final that San Diego won.
